What we built.
Next Big Idea Club is a subscription book club for nonfiction. Its curators, Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Daniel Pink and Adam Grant, pick the season's most important new nonfiction, and members receive the books along with the ideas behind them.
Moweb designed and developed the club's website on a bespoke CMS, and managed it after launch. The site has to do three jobs at once: sell a subscription, publish a steady flow of editorial content, and explain the club's book donation work for under-resourced schools.
The Next Big Idea Club challenge
A subscription club's website is the product's front door, its shop and its publication at the same time.
- 1A sign-up that earns trust quickly - the visitor is being asked to subscribe, not to buy one book, so the offer, the curators and the free trial have to be clear within the first screen.
- 2Subscriptions and payments - recurring membership needs secure payment handling and account access that members do not have to think about.
- 3Editorial that the club can run itself - a magazine of author conversations and book coverage only works if the club's own team can publish daily without waiting on developers.
- 4A cause alongside the commerce - the donation initiative had to be presented as part of the membership, not as an afterthought on a separate page.
- 5Readers in more than one country - the site serves members in different regions, with the region selectable from the header.
Our solutions
We built the membership journey, the magazine and the content tooling as one website on a CMS the club controls.
- Bespoke CMS website - designed and developed for the club rather than adapted from a template, so the structure follows how the club sells and publishes.
- Subscription journey - a clear path from the home page to a free trial and paid membership, with secure payments.
- Curators and curated content - the four curators and their selections presented as the reason to join.
- Magazine - a trending and latest editorial section with topics, author features and most-read lists, published by the club's team through the CMS.
- Book donation initiative - a dedicated section explaining the partnership that supports students in under-resourced schools, with its own call to join.
- Managed after launch - Moweb looked after the site once it was live, covering maintenance and changes.
The product, up close.
